Jamaicans have expressions that will capture just about any situation and cover just about any topic. Here is our list of the top 10 Jamaican sayings.
- Horse dead & cow fat – when someone is beating around the bush (for e.g. when telling a story) or over-embellishing something with ‘fodder’, you say they’re talking bout “horse dead and cow fat”
- Mi nuh come fi count cow, mi come fi drink milk – don’t waste my time, I’m not hear to fool around … or, stop talking and deliver what you promised.
- Pickney who cyan hear will feel – said to many Jamaican children over the years, it describes children who will have to learn ‘the hard way’ (hard knocks) since they won’t take telling from an adult.
- Cyan ketch quako yuh ketch him shirt – you may not have caught/gotten the exact thing or person that you went for, but you got something close enough …. usually used to describe a situation where you can’t find a person (usually to ‘discipline’ them), but you were able to find a relative or someone else who was close to the person.
- Wah sweet nanny goat ah go run him belly – be careful of the things that you’re enjoying right now, because later on the ‘sweetness’ might end up hurting you.
- Every dawg have him day and every puss have him four o’clock – be patient; you might not be achieving something as quickly as you like, but your day is coming too. Also used to describe situations where one day someone will have to ‘pay’ for their actions.
- From wappy kill fillup – describes something that happened a long time ago.
- Play wid puppy, puppy lick yuh mouth – familiarity often breeds contempt. If you didn’t play with the puppy, the puppy wouldn’t have been in the situation where it could end up licking your mouth.
- Wanti wanti cyan get it, getty gety nuh want it – those who don’t have it are longing for it, and those who have it don’t really appreciate it.
- Cow neva know di use ah him tail til’ him lose it – you really don’t know exactly what you have until you no longer have it; appreciate and acknowledge the good things in your life.
